MMA DVD Reviews

Ram
page Greatest Hits
With the cinema seeing the release of The A-Team this summer, the UFC have decided to cash in on one of their more bankable stars in the shape of Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson and give him his own greatest hits DVD. Only Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell so far has been the only other UFC star to get his own DVD, so this shows how much faith they have in his box office potnetial.
Featuring Rampage's career to just before he coached on season 10 of TUF and his fallout with Dana White after he took the filming of The A-Team over his fight with Rashad, it seems all is good once againwhich is why we now get this compilation of Rampages best fights from PRIDE and the UFC. Featuring his maulings of Kevin Randleman, Wanderlei Silva, Chuck Liddell (Twice) and the now very famous bout with Ricardo Arona with the Powerbomb from hell finish among others this tries to be a decent bio of a potentially great fighter, however it's not up to the slick standards of say a WWE style bio. There's no talking heads, no interviews with the man himself of Dana White, so it's just a collection of fights with a rather monotone voice over. With no extras whatsoever this is probably a missed opportunity and gets filed under could do better. However at the very least Jackon's Pride fights are worth having all on disc alone, so it's not a dead loss.

UFC 110 - Nogueira Vs. Velasquez
The UFC travelled to Sydney, Australia for their first ever event on Feb 21st. Featuring a main card that is the best lineup since UFC 100 the card delievered on all levels. The main event featured what many considered a shocking result, Wanderlei Vs. Bisping was a war and left people hoping for more and maybe a rematch somewhere down the line. Tickets for the event sold out on the first day they were available to the general public. It was the second fastest sellout of an event in the history of the UFC, behind UFC 83 (which was the first ever UFC event in Canada) and the public got more than they could ahve ever hoped for.
Once again the extras don't exactly set the workld alight especially for the first ever event in Australia however they do come with the additional interviews with some of the fighters.

UFC 106 - Ortiz Vs. Griffin II
November 21st in Las Vegas saw the return bout which many people thought that Forrest Griffin won saw Forrest get his chance to set the record straight against the always controversial Tito Ortiz. The card was riddled with injuries and replacement fighters as UFC 106 was originally slated to have the titanic main event of Brock Lesnar Vs. Shane Carwain, however Lesnar contracted a potentially life threatning illness which has seen the bout move to UFC 116 in June 2010. Even Griffin wasn't Ortiz's first opponent (IT was meant to be Mark Coleman), so the card has a thrown together feel, although the quality is pretty high. Overall worth a look especially for some of the main card bouts.
The extras return to the usual Weigh ins, countdown and behind the scenes.

Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin
Josh Koscheck vs. Anthony Johnson

UFC 105 - Coture Vs. Vera
UFC 105 came from Manchester England and featured a strong showing from all the Brits on the card none more so than Mike Bisping who took on the underated Denis Kang and Dan 'The Outlaw' Hardy faced Mike 'Quick' Swick after an injured Dong Yung Kim pulled out. Dana White then announced that the winner of this bout would go on to be the number 1 contender for George St. Pierre's Welterweight title. Overall a strong card from the UK topped off by a rather lacklustre main event featuring the recently disappionting Vera Vs. Randy Coture who just doesn't seem to age.
Extras this time only feature the countdown and behind the scenes.

UFC 104 - Machida Vs. Shogun
October 24th Los Angeles, California saw UFC 104 come to town in a card that was overshadowed by the controversial ending to the main event between Light Heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua. The rest of the Main card was extremely solid featuring some decent finishes and great KO's The undercard was also fairly solid set of matches and a KO of the night in the Barry Hardonk match.

On August 29th 2009 the UFC travelled to Portland Oregon for UFC 102. Featuring a main event of two previous UFC Heavyweight Interim title holders Randy Coture face Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira in a bout that had high expectations for these two veterans to deliver and deliver it did. The card featured an incredible 21 second KO in the Marquadt/Maia bout and a new record KO of 7 seconds (Don Frye & James Irving jointly held the record at 8 seconds) in the Duffe Hague bout. UFC 101- Declaration
UFC 101 was held on August 8th 2009 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and featured the double main event of the second title defense of Lightweight Champion BJ Penn against Kenny Florian, and a non-title Light Heavyweight bout for Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva against former Light Heavyweight Champion Forrest Griffin. The Griffin Silva bout is shocking for its end and then what happens directly after more than the main event itself between Penn and Florian which on paper looked like it could have been the fight of the year. The card itself was pretty much so-so and after the highlight reel of UFC 100 had a lot to live up to.
Eslewhere the card featured an awful lot of decision ends with the matches of varying quality. Only ever going to be remembered for the end of the previously mentioned Griffin Silva bout and not a lot else. Usual extras with the addtions of the weigh ins, which unless you are a completist are a bit pointless really.
Main Card
UFC Lightweight Championship Bout

UFC 100
UFC 100 was held on July 11th 2009 in Las Vegas and was set up as the showcase event to end all events. UFC 100 managed to pull it off to with many of the marquee bouts livning up to the hype. After Coture left the UFC an interim belt was created for the heavyweights and Frank Mir won this version of the title, contract wrangles were sorted and Coture came back only to be blasted into oblivion by the monster Brock Lesnar who took his world title, which in turn set up the main event. Lesnar had previously lost to Mir in his debut after getting caught in a kneebar. So the revenge title unification bout was set and it was a fantastic main event to end the card and features Lesnar reliving his WWE roots with a brilliant post match speech.
Elsewhere on the card there were some pretty one sided affairs, none more so than in the battle of the TUF coaches in the UK's Mike 'The Count Bisping Vs. Dan 'Hollywood' Henderson which ends in a devastating KO. On the undercard the Jon Jones/ Jake O'Brien and CB Dolloway/Tim Lawlor bouts are the standouts. A turning point in the UFC history is worth owning on DVD.
You would also think considering what a landmark that UFC 100 was they would have added just that bit extra to the bonus features but as usual we are left with the usual countdown and behind the scenes.
Main Card
Heavyweight Championship unification bout
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
Welterweight Championship bout
