Anime Corner - January 2010

Welcome everyone to the first Anime Corner of 2010 here at Screen One.

This month we shall be looking forward at some of the licenses picked up by UK distributors and some great new titles scheduled to come to UK fans in 2010.

Fate/Stay Night (Distributor: MVM – Due: January)

Shirou Emiya is orphaned after losing his parents in a fire and is adopted by a sorcerer named Kiritsugu Emiya. Despite his limited magical powers Shirou wishes to become an Ally of Justice like his father, until he is advertently drawn into a dispute among sorcerers called the Holy Grail War. In order to protect himself Shirou has to summon a female "Servant" called Sabre as the fight for the possession of the wish granting Holy Grail intensifies. Supernatural magical mayhem from Studio Deen to kick the year off.

D.Gray-Man (Manga Entertainment – Due: February)

In the late 19th century, the evil Millennium Earl has a plot to destroy the world using mechanical weapons called Akuma. Young Allen Walker, a boy with a cursed eye and built in arm weapon containing the power “Innocence”, joins a group of exorcists to help defeat the Akuma and foil Earl’s plans. Both sides are in search for a powerful piece of Innocence known as the Great Heart that will ensure victory for the possessor. This epic 103 part adaptation of Katsura Hoshino’s best selling Manga should prove to be as big a hit here as it was in Japan.

Romeo X Juliet (Distributor: MVM – Due: February)

This Steampunk makeover of one of Shakespeare’s classic plays from GONZO was originally scheduled for a 2009 release but finally hits the UK shelves in 2010.

Ponyo On A Cliff By The Sea (Theatrical Release) (Distributor: Optimum – Due: February)

Another title which had its UK release delayed from last year, this latest film from legendary Hayao Miyazaki about a young fish girl who wants to live as a human should follow the success in UK cinemas of Miyazaki’s previous hits Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle.

Rozen Maiden (Distributor: MVM – Due: March)

Jun Sakurada refuses to go to school after a traumatic experience, spending his days locked in his room ordering supernatural things online. One day Jun gets a message telling him to place an order for a special item in his desk drawer, which he does dismissing it as a joke. Much to his surprise the order note disappears and mysterious box appears, in which is a walking talking doll. The doll introduces herself as Shinku, the Fifth Doll of the Rozen Maiden. Jun’s life is about to change with the help of Shinku and the rest of the Rozen Maiden. Definitely one for the moe fans.

Slayers Revolution/Slayers Evolution-R (Distributor: MVM – Due: Early 2010)

In 2008, after an eleven years absence, Lina Inverse, Gourry Gabriev, Amelia Wil Tesla Seyruun and Zelgadis Greywords returned with a new series Slayers Revolution followed a year later by Slayers Evolution-R. Expect the same manic explosive antics we’ve become accustomed to from our favourite girl sorceress with updated and improved animation. And with director Takashi Watanabe and renowned production studio J.C. Staff at the helm there is much to look forward to as MVM continues to unleash its much welcome assault on the UK of The Slayers franchise.

5 Centimeters Per Second (Manga Entertainment – Due: May)

Two school friends Takaki Tohno and Akari Shinohara go back a long way and are very close but distance threatens to challenge that friendship when Akari’s parents’ job means they have to move away. The young pair try to maintain their relationship but a further obstacle appears when Takaki’s family move him away even further from Akari. Set in pre-Internet and mobile phone Japan, this latest offering from melancholy master Makoto Shinkai (Voices Of A Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days) is split into three parts and offers his first non-sci-fi related work.

The Sky Crawlers (Manga Entertainment – Due: May)

In an alternate world despite living in peaceful times, private corporations put on aerial battles purely for show to ease a population accustomed to war. The pilots are genetically reproduced humanoids known as Kildren, designed to live as adolescents until they killed then reproduced again afterwards. YĆ«ichi Kannami is a Kildren with flickers of memories from his previous existence. Ghost In The Shell mastermind Mamoru Oshii directs this adaptation of Hiroshi Mori’s novel, featuring stunning animation and a thought provoking, existential storyline.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Brotherhood (Manga Entertainment – Due: June)

Just over a year since it made its triumphant return to Japanese TV, it appears that UK fans are not going to have to wait long for this reboot of one of the most popular titles in the Anime canon. FMA was a huge hit in its original animated incarnation but since the original Manga was still in progress the producers created their own storyline for the second half of the series. Now, the story begins again but this time sticking more faithfully to the Manga which provides fans with a whole new story and perspective to this epic tale of alchemy, philosophy, brotherly love and warfare.

Naruto: Shippuden (Manga Entertainment – Due: June)

Those fans unhappy with the current run of filler stories to close out the first series of Naruto can at long last breathe a sigh of relief. Coming this summer is the return to the adaptation of the original Manga under the new title of Naruto: Shippuden. Whilst the central theme remains the plight by the titular hero to save his old friend Sasuke from the clutches of the evil Orochimaru, it features an older and more mature Naruto with two and a half years having passed since the end of the first series.

Soul Eater (Manga Entertainment – Due: July)

Set in the Death Weapon Meister Academy, students are made up of teams of a weapon meister and human weapon, with the goal of the weapon attaining the status of Death Scythe by collecting ninety-nine evil human souls and one witch. Focusing largely around the antics of Soul and his meister Maka, Black Star and his weapon Tsubaki and Death the Kid and his weapons Patty and Liz, this macabre, quirky but hilarious series is one of the more inventive and unique looking Anime to hit the scene in years.

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (Manga Entertainment – Due: TBC)

Just when you thought it was safe, here comes another reboot of one of the most famed Anime series ever. Hideaki Anno clearly can’t seem to let this go until his vision is totally realised, so anyone who continues to live in hope of seeing any completely new EVA related material look away now. This four movie retelling of the story may boast up to date CGI and 3D visuals and a smattering of new or previous omitted scenes but ultimately is the original TV series all over again tarted up a bit. Whether or end we get a satisfactory conclusion by the end of it remains to be seen…

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (Distributor: MVM – Due: TBC)

Balsa is a wandering, spear wielding warrior who saves lives in atonement for her past sins. Upon returning to her home village she saves the life of Prince Chagum and is offered the job of being his personal bodyguard. A smart move on Chagrum’s part due to the small matter of his own father trying to kill him. Based on the first of a series of ten novels this 26 part shonen fantasy series comes from noted studio Production IG.

Code Geass – Lelouch Of The Rebellion R2 (Distributor: Beez – Due: TBC)

The second season of the recent mega hit takes place one year after the end of the Black Rebellion with Area 11 back under the tyrannical control of the Britannian Empire, with the natives living under the oppressive regime while the Britannians enjoy a better style of living. For one young student however, life is about to take an unexpected turn as he is forced to delve into a past he is unaware of. Expect more twist, turns and shocking revelations as this Mecha show with a difference continues.

Another interesting line-up of new titles and continuing franchises to look forward to there, with the noticeable reduction in the gap between the original TV airings in Japan to the DVD release here in the UK for some well known shows. A concerted response to the rise of fan subs perhaps?
